The Clerk of the County Assembly, Mr. Salim Juma, today received a petition from residents and tenants of Mwembekuku and Bondeni, Mombasa Island, over decades-long land tenure insecurity.
The petitioners, who describe themselves as "owners of houses without land," say they have lived in the area for generations but remain without secure tenure, leaving them vulnerable to displacement.
While noting that the National Land Commission has investigated the historical landlord-tenant dispute and issued recommendations, including a determination in August 2025 on tenants-at-will, the residents lament that lack of a clear implementation framework has left them in limbo.
They now want the County Assembly to seek information on county plans for the area, establish steps taken so far, engage the NLC on implementation of its recommendations, and ensure affected residents receive timely and accurate information.
