The County Assembly has resolved to launch an urgent investigation into the management and operations of Coast General Teaching and Referral Hospital (CGTRH), following public outcry over alleged negligence, declining standards of care, and governance concerns.

The motion mover, Hon. Allen Katana MCA representing Shanzu Ward, highlighted Coast Generalโ€™s role as the principal referral facility in the Coastal region and raised alarm over the suspension of Chief Executive Officer Dr. Iqbal Khandwala amid allegations of malpractice and mismanagement.

In its resolution, the Assembly directed the Committee on Health to conduct a comprehensive inquiry into the hospitalโ€™s administration and service delivery, investigate allegations of negligence and loss of life linked to operational failures, and examine whether due process was followed in Dr. Khandwalaโ€™s suspension.

The Committee was also tasked with engaging stakeholders; including the County Executive Committee Member for Health, the Hospital Board, staff representatives, and members of the public to ensure a thorough and inclusive review.

The Committee findings and recommendations are expected to be tabled within seven days, with the Assembly emphasizing that the probe is critical to restoring public confidence and safeguarding the constitutional right to health.

During the same sitting, the Leader of Majority Party, Hon. Athman Mwamwiri, tabled several key oversight documents before the House. These included Auditor-General reports on Coast General Teaching and Referral Hospital, the County Alcoholic Drink Control Fund, the County Government of Mombasa, and Mombasa Investment Corporation.

Also presented were the Mombasa County Public Service Board Annual Report (2024/2025) and the Evaluation Report on compliance with constitutional values and principles. All reports were committed to the County Public Investments and Accounts Committee, except the Public Service Board Annual Report, which was referred to the Committee on Labour and Public Service Administration.

The Speaker, Hon. Aharub Khatri reaffirmed that the scrutiny of these reports is vital to strengthening accountability and safeguarding public trust in county governance.
