Top officials from Coast General Teaching and Referral Hospital, alongside the County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Health, failed to appear before the County Assemblyโ€™s Health Committee to answer allegations of medical negligence. Despite being formally invited, the officials failed to show up, opting instead to send a last-minute request for a seven-day reprieve.

The Committee, visibly unimpressed, flagged the absence as a deliberate evasion. Members stressed that the allegations under review are grave, demanding immediate answers and documentation from the hospitalโ€™s management. Their no-show was formally recorded as a breach of accountability and a setback to transparency in public health governance.

In a firm resolution, the Committee announced it will reissue the invitations. It warned that continued defiance could trigger stronger measures, including referrals to investigative agencies such as the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) and the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC).

Committee members vowed to pursue the case relentlessly, assuring the public that no official will be shielded from scrutiny. They pledged to use every oversight tool at their disposal, to safeguard the integrity of healthcare service delivery and enforce corrective measures to uphold patient rights, so that similar lapses are prevented.

โ€œThe public deserves answers, and those entrusted with health services must be held to account,โ€ the Committee chairperson, Hon. Bernard Ogutu declared.
